<p><span style="font-family: Arial;">I just read a great article on <a href="http://www.everydayhealth.com/diet-and-nutrition-pictures/a-guide-to-common-cleanses.aspx#/slide-11">EverydayHealth.com.</a> It talks about cleanses being all the rage. The fact is that liquid cleanses don&#8217;t work well as a long-term weight loss solution. I do believe however that a 1-3 day cleanse or juice fast can be a great way to reboot healthy eating and build will-power. But as the article suggest, even replacing just one meal with a juice is a great way to give your body a break from digestion so that it can focus on some much needed deep cleaning. My body LOVES the energy and oxygen from a tall glass of fresh green juice. Don&#8217;t let the name fool you, it doesn&#8217;t taste like grass! Apples, carrots and pears give it the perfect amount of sweetness. Want bright eyes and renewed skin? Designate one week where you only have a juice or smoothie for breakfast. Just do your normal routine for the rest of the day!</span></p>

What if you were in control of food, rather than it being in control of you?</p>
<p>By gradually moving toward a cleaner diet, starting with a one-day fast, you will begin to take your power back from food. The ego is a strong, animalistic force that will fight us if we attempt to follow a strict diet that takes all of the pleasure out of eating. And most of the time, it will win. <p>Like many women in their twenties, I was obsessed about my weight. My days consisted of consuming non-fat frozen yogurt (remember those days?) and running. But every third day or so, I would break down and eat a bunch of cookies or a big meal. After the fact, I would beat myself up and promise to start eating right again the very next day. In those moments, my willpower was mighty and I was determined to change my eating patterns for good. But, it always ended the same – something inside me would sabotage my efforts. My primary emotion was guilt and my primary thoughts were obsessive – I obsessed over food, calories, and what I was or was not going to eat.</p>
<p>This went on for nearly ten years.</p>
<p>Looking back, the saddest part of it all was that the constant obsessing and beating myself up completely robbed me of my inner peace. Thankfully, something told me to get away, which is when I moved to Chicago and had a spiritual awakening. (You can read about this experience in my first book, Opening to Life). After learning that my primary function was to express spirit or life-energy, everything changed. I surrendered and gave up my battle with food. Initially I gained some weight as I let go of a ten-year pattern of severe restriction. But over the next few years, I lost the weight I’d put on and began thinking about food in an entirely different way.</p>
<p>I also realized that guilt had become an addiction for me – even more so than food! Each time I overate, guilt would overwhelm me and stick with me for the entire day. Then, if I hadn’t given myself a guilt trip in a while, this monster would rear its ugly head and propel me to overeat just so I could feed the guilt monster that lived inside of me another big dose of energy!</p>
<p>I finally decided to swear off guilt and starve him to death by not feeding him any more of my precious time or energy. Even if I overate, I refused to feel guilty. Once my internal battle with guilt ended, my patterns with food loosened a bit and I had more flexibility and less compulsion. This was the beginning of the end. I also learned an amazing secret that has guided my eating choices ever since: hunger is a sign that your body is ready to metabolize food. Hunger is actually good! Eating when not hungry, however, is very, very bad…</p>
<p>Over time, I have learned to eat for peace. Since I won’t let myself feel guilty anyway, I might as well make choices that are going to lead to inner peace! I also eat clean, and only when I’m hungry so that excess food doesn’t build up in me and block spiritual energy from flowing through my body. No amount of food feels as good as a spiritual high!</p>
<p>I have put what I’ve learned over the years into a program called the Detox Lifestyle Diet. It is a five-step approach that teaches how to gradually clean up ones diet and begin eating for peace and energy rather than trying to fill oneself up with the dense energy that food provides.</p>
<p>The energy of spirit moves fast and when it flows through us we get high on life! But we have to decrease the density of our cells in order to effectively metabolize the light of spiritual energy. When we do, excessive cravings for food go away and we become accustomed to feeling balanced and energized.<br />

<p>My sister Michelle and I did a cleanse yesterday. In the morning we enjoyed a tall green juice with every imaginable veggie you can think of and added some pear and ginger to give it a sweet zing. We drank lots of water throughout the day. In the evening – okay, afternoon because our stomachs would not allow us to wait a minute longer – we enjoyed the most delicious soup you can imagine. Michelle is vowing to make a big pot once a week and eat it every night. Her voice, filled with gratitude for me giving her the meal of her life (albeit she was starving), pleaded for the recipe. So here it is:</p>
<p>2 stalks leeks</p>
<p>2 tablespoons olive oil</p>
<p>2 small bundles of organic broccoli</p>
<p>Chopped cilantro (to taste)</p>
<p>1 small avocado</p>
<p>Salt, pepper, and a dash of cayenne pepper</p>
<p>Water</p>
<p>Slice the leeks and sauté them in olive oil using a soup pan. Add chopped broccoli and water so the water is just covering the broccoli. Cook until tender. Turn down heat, add cilantro, avocado and spices. Allow it to sit for five minutes to absorb the flavors then turn off the heat. Blend with immersion blender (The one I have is amazing – Braun Deluxe Hand Blender and Chopper – It is so simple to use and easy to clean!) or pour it into a regular blender and puree. Enjoy right away or store for later. Bon Appetit!</p>

It is a completely liquid diet that evolved during the 1940s and was made famous by Stanley Burroughs. He called his program detoxification and stated that it removed toxins from the body. He promoted it as an aid for weight loss, and a cure for ulcers.</p>

The cleanse involves no solid food and includes drinking purified water infused with lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Laxative tea is also ingested and saline solution can be used to clear out the bowels and lower GI system.</p>
<p>Those opposed to the Master Cleanse suggest that the lack of nutrients could lead to deficiencies over a long period of time. In the short term practitioners can experience headaches and lethargy along with weight loss. It is also suggested that weight gain can manifest after the diet is completed owing to the body reacting to having been in starvation mode and quickly converting food into fat. That is why proponents of the Master Cleans recommend a change to healthy eating habits once the diet is completed.</p>

<p>It might help if you view yourself as a container. You are comprised of four levels: Spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. Like everything in nature, our primary function is to receive, contain and express abundant amounts of life or spiritual energy. Without the life that animates our cells, we are no longer living. Being mentally, emotionally and physically clear is essential in order to feel spiritually charged and fully alive.</p>
<p>While food is a valuable source of energy, it is only one source. It is the densest source, and is designed to nourish the physical body. There are other sources of energy that feed the body, mind and spirit. Your breath, for example, is a powerful energizer. Being in nature is energizing, as is sitting in silence. There are many sources of energy and relying too much on food causes us to become desensitized to more refined energy sources. It is possible to become psychologically dependent upon the feeling that dense food energy provides. The Detox Lifestyle Diet releases some of that density in the form of toxins and allows us to be nourished by the variety of energy sources that surround us each day.</p>
<p>Changing the structure of your cells so that you are well nourished from a variety of energy sources is a process that takes time. <p>While detox is essential, it is only effective for weight loss if it is incorporated into your lifestyle. Extreme fasting to lose weight is no different than yoyo dieting.  There is a disturbing trend on the rise. Many people are now using the same “diet rollercoaster” approach using fasting instead of restrictive dieting, setting them up to regain the weight after their fast is over.</p>
<p>The rollercoaster of chronic dieting does not work. Allowing yourself to overeat for days, weeks, and months with the idea that you will eventually “go on a diet” leads to guilt, frustration and future weight gain.</p>
<p>The process is the outcome. What does this mean? It means that the way you live each day is the way you’re going to be in the future. Over-eating on a regular basis and strict dieting are opposite ends of the same spectrum – neither behavior can be sustained long-term. Each eventually leads you back to the other. The body strives for homeostasis (balance) and will instinctively drive you to overeat after severe restriction. Your own body will fight your efforts to maintain weight loss after a severe diet or fast.</p>
